~ Victoria Day weekend ~

Here in Canada, Victoria Day is celebrated on the Monday on or before May 24th.
The Sovereign's birthday has been celebrated in Canada since the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901).
May 24, Queen Victoria's birthday, was declared a holiday by the Legislature of the Province of Canada in 1845.
After Confederation, the Queen's birthday was celebrated every year on May 24 unless that date was a Sunday, in which case a proclamation was issued providing for the celebration on May 25.
After the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, an Act was passed by the Parliament of Canada establishing a legal holiday on May 24 in each year (or May 25 if May 24 fell on a Sunday) under the name Victoria Day.
It unofficially marks the end of Winter, and here in Southern Ontario at least, it is the date when we feel it is safe to plant annuals and tender plants.
The weather is often wet, and thwarts the plans of families who use this first long weekend of ‘summer’ for outdoor activities, including firework displays. Saturday is forecast to be very wet, and Sunday to be cool. Regardless of the conditions it is always nice to have that extra day with family.
Celebratory or not, I hope you all have a great weekend.

  1. Have a lovely time whatever you do! We are heading north on Saturday. The weather forecast is grim! ('It's grim up north') is a saying here.

  3. We're supposed to have rain tomorrow as well and very cold on Sunday so our weather looks to be the same for the long weekend. As you say, more often than not, the weather does NOT cooperate! lol Your flowers are just beautiful...my tulips have finally opened as have my daffodils so now I can truly say Spring has arrived:-) Think of you often and my prayers continue for your husband. xoxo

I will be spending some of the long weekend cleaning the house and getting ready for the birth of my new grandbaby.... and my DIL's parents who may be coming to stay while she is at the hospital.

  11. Very interesting facts! So it is next weekend that you will have a three day weekend coming... and then your spring will begin! By the photos you have been posting, it looks like she has already arrived!

This weekend we have heat! 101 and then another day we have 103 degrees... the air conditioner is OFFICIALLY on!

I can do without this kind of heat. I will not complain! It is too early to start that. I am convinced it will make for a long hot summer if I do.

    Love and hugs
